What is True?
(Posted September 28, 2023)
- “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”
- “God will not hear you unless you believe He will hear you; but if you believe He will be as good as your faith.”
– Charles Spurgeon, British Baptist Pastor
These moments in our existence as a country are an exercise in discontent. We are overwhelmed by a constant diet of politics, slander, lies, innuendo. What is least abundant in our lives is peace, quiet and a sense of a promising future.
All of this uncertainty leads to an atmosphere of doubt, of suspicion about the “truth” that someone or some entity tells us is “the gospel truth.” Where we once might have followed our leaders in faith, these days we’re not so sure that our leaders are leading to benefit us, or to benefit them.
In an era like this, people hunger, people thirst for what is true. This yearning is not restricted to the U.S. but is universal.
Feed Your Hunger for the Truth
On this World Communion Sunday, we hear the rumblings of hunger coming from the belly of the World everywhere. Against a background of waning pandemic and with the consequences of the things we have done to this planet to upset its delicate balance, we are famished. Famished for hope, wishing that our leaders will step up, set the table, put the Bread of Promise on the plates, pour the Cup of forgiveness, and call our brothers and sisters to the table, everywhere.
As we gather this Sunday, with Cheryl Hill leading us in song, let us lay aside our awareness of division and instead share the bread and wine of kinship with all people, who each in their own way have been seeking the nourishment of the Divine one.
I hope you will join us, in person or online so that we may feed you with caring and kindred love.
