Music Brings Truth
(Posted February 6, 2025)
It's not every day that one expects to hear a famous existentialist (above) write with poetic beauty about God and music. But Nietzsche did. I think his thoughts on the topic help validate that music impacts all of us, and brings truth into our lives.
What Is a ‘Thin Place?’
These past few weeks I’ve spent time with you examining what Celtic spirituality calls “The Thin Places,” – places where the closeness of God is most often felt. It is a border spot, not unlike the place where the sea meets the shore.
Music That Moves Us to Thin Places
Of course, all of us have been praying for and are relieved to know that Jim Moriarty is on the mend from his accident and surgery. I’ve been planning to dedicate a Sunday “thin place” message with Jim and the choir, and still plan on doing this when he returns to the Sanctuary. But right now, since we need the healing effect of music for ourselves, I’ve also asked Doug and Ginny Hartline to give us their own sense of the music that has moved them the most.
This Sunday the message will be found in the music Doug and Ginny choose to share with us as deeply meaningful to them, to touch and, as Nietzsche said, “to lead our thoughts to higher things, to elevate, even to make us tremble…”
Come join us this Sunday when we can experience the thin place that touch our musicians’ hearts.
Weather Alert
A special note about this Sunday: Some weathercasters are saying that there may be a storm on Saturday into Sunday morning. Of course we’re hoping that they are wrong, but just to remind you, if the weather is unsafe for us to gather and we have to call off services, you can find out online at the Cancellations page of WFSB, or simply call the church phone number - 203-744-6177 – and we will post a notification on the church’s outgoing message. Right now, we’re ready for some music!
