Our Music: Traditional Anthems or Praise?
(Posted Aug. 22, 2017)
Again, I want to thank Howard and Cheryl for their musical contributions at last Sunday’s service. They work so well together and are always a pleasure to hear.
Last week I attended a choral seminar in Pennsylvania. Over two hundred musicians were in attendance – mostly choir directors. They are from churches of different denominations. When questioned about the type of music is played during a service, about a third used traditional anthems while another third leaned more towards the Praise. But another third, which I would place myself and our music, were considered ‘blend’ churches – churches that use several types of music to coordinate with the sermon theme for the day. Many churches have two services – a Saturday Praise, and a Sunday formal service.
A most interesting statement made by one of the clinicians was that there is a movement among young families to seek a more meaningful, traditional type service. I will not respond to any questions related to this statement since I don’t have the actual facts. Yet, I think what we are doing here at First Church may be a perfect blend.
August 27th is our traditional Yard/pool gathering. Nancy Wildman will bring her musical talents to this service, leading us in song.
